Forget your plan for a minute This morning at breakfast, I gave my son (the high school junior) some advice for how to quickly finish his art notebook cover project, which was already late on day two of school. âHey, instead of doing another elaborate drawing like the one you were up all night doing, why not make a quick collage? You can use existing images from magazines and your old posters and cut them out and arrange them in some pattern and just see what happens. âJust see what happens, Mom? I have a plan for this cover.â Blank stares at the table. The 18-yr-old started snorting over his scrambled eggs and talking in some silly accent and they both began goofing on collages. âOk, whatever, I was just trying to help.â Because I have teenagers at home, I realize this makes me an âauthority/ parent-type figureâ and maybe not someone you want giving you advice. My 18-yr-old just nods at me while I continue talking after he is finished railing about how I donât understand him and this is usually my cue to calmly stop myself from being such a mom and work on leaving the room. But I actually do understand him. I still remember being a college student and feeling like my life had to follow one track and be focused and accomplished, one class logically building on to the next, one project leading to the next one. The truth is, life rarely ever works like that. Iâm thankful now that I went to an art school and spent most of my time in film theory classes because I was forced to consider what I was going to make of my life every semester. I had to keep thinking about what extra skill or experience to add to this five-year âcollageâ I was making as an undergraduate working towards a BFA. Looking back, thatâs a nice metaphor for what I was doing. But at the time, I felt exactly like Jenny X did worrying about â falling behind.â Jenny says something very wise in her post when she talks about her internship in China and how âits never too late to be in charge of what you want to do. And that on the flip side of fearing falling behind is being constrained by the pressure of following a well-planned path that may or may not still be what you want.â Well said, Jenny. And true. I think the greatest challenge for current MIT students and anyone considering coming to MIT is to be flexible while still managing to get things done and maintain the high standards you all have for yourselves. There is so much to do here, so much to get involved in, and so many paths to try. But you wonât know where one is going to lead until you give yourself the opportunity to change your mind, and be led in a new direction. Matt wrote a post about taking a gap year and Gabe wrote very eloquently this summer on the life changing aspects of hiking for a semester and getting in tune with his authentic self. And while these options are definitely worth thinking about, I challenge all of you to consider your time in college more as a work of art than as a focused linear roadmap. You all have brilliant minds. You are going to do big important things. You just may not do them all according to how you imagined they would unfold and thatâs ok. Remember, we ask you in the application essays to tell us how you handled a situation in which things did not go according to plan. We do this for a good reason. In all my years as a mom, as an artist, as a communications professional, as a homeowner, as a student (over and over again it seems)⦠things very rarely go according to plan. And when this happens to you, head over to the LIST gallery and take a look at some of the artwork on display and be inspired or travel off campus with some friends and go into Boston to try something youâve never done before. And if none of those things end up working to help you gain some new perspective, then get down on the floor with a bunch of magazines and start cutting and arranging and make a collage. Just see what happens.

SENTRI no debe confundirse con un programa muy similar conocido comoà Nexus, una tarjeta de cruce rà ¡pido entre USA y Canadà ¡. En este artà culo se informa de quià ©nes pueden solicitar SENTRI, cuà ¡les son los beneficios, cà ³mo se aplica por esa tarjeta, ycuà ¡les son las causas comunes por las que la solicitud es negada. Some personal goals for employees at level one is: being able to speak up in meetings, get along with co-workers better, to talk to their superiors a lot better without being terrified of being rejected. Level 2 employees have the same goals as the level one employee with some differences. Some goals that level two employees have set for themselves are as follows: wanting to move up in the company, get sales up to ten percent before the next quarter. The incentive for reaching the customer goal would be a hundred dollars and free lunch on the company for 3 employees of level one and three employees for level two. Some of the incentives for the level one employee, once they have achieved their goal, would be a promotion with a pay raise. For finishing a project before the deadline would be a fifty dollar bonus on their next check. Level two employees would be the same, a promotion and a pay raise. Once they achieve their goal of getting sales up the company will give incentive for the first three employees who reach the goal. The incentive will be a week vacation with pay. For level 3 employees the goal setting is a bit more complicated. Some goals could be: having their department reaches a team goal within thirty days. A team goal could be to increase communication through the entire department. Also getting employee feedback from the departments to reach the specific goal (Goals and Expectations, 2011). Giving out monthly progress reports to level one and two employees, telling the employees how they are doing and where they are to achieve their own personal and professional goals. Once the communication goal is reached by one department the entire department will get fifty dollars on their next paycheck and will get a free lunch to a great restaurant on the company. For the level three employees the incentives for reaching goals and expectations would be a weekââ¬â¢s paid vacation from the company for achieving the progress report goal for the first 4 employees. This goal is also available to the level four employees also. For level 4 employees they will also make up goals for themselves as well. Some of the goals would be figuring out how to relieve the stress from their employees to increase productivity and performance. How to keep employees from going home early or calling in sick from work on Fridays. Some suggestions would be giving the employees free massage on their breaks, giving a longer lunch hour on Fridays. Setting and posting team goals that are simple and are seen everywhere. Level 5 employees personal goals could be to get out on the floor to help out lower level employees about sixty percent of the day for the next sixty days. The department goal could be to develop a plan to keep more employees from quitting and to lower turnover by fifty percent. Whichever level achieves this goal will get a twenty-five percent raise. The levels that will be competing will be levels four, five and seven. Levels 6 employees will have goals and expectations to fulfill. Some goals and expectations could be to stay up-to-date on advertising until the end of the year. Plan a company event three times a year. The big goal is to talk to customers about what they want out of the company, or what they want to see the company change and make it happen within six months. Prince Among Slaves Prince Among Slavesà considered as a historical documentary directed, written and produced byà Andrea Kalin. This film is a story ofà Abdul Rahman Sori, a prince from West Africa who had become a slave in the United States and got freedom 40 years later. Abdul Rahman was a prince of a kingdom in Futa Jallon, West Africa. In 1788, at the age of 26, his father sent him in war, where he captured and sold to English slavers. A slave- ship headed for American shores from West Africa with hundreds of men, women and children and Abdul Rahman was among them. Eight months later the survivors came with other goods in Mississippi for sale. Abdul Rahman was purchased by a struggling Mississippi farmer named Thomas Foster. Foster hoped that the strong African would help establish his farm. Sori tried to tell Foster that he was a prince and he stole from his familybut foster didnââ¬â¢t listen to him. He cut Suriââ¬â¢s long hair, which was a sign of nobility and made him to work. Once Abdul Rahman escaped from Fosters firm but after several weeks, he realized that he never could go back to Futa Jelon. So he voluntary returned and started working in Fosters firm as slave. With Abdul Rahmans hard work, Foster quickly became one of the wealthiest men in Mississippi. In the mean time, Foster brought another woman slave named Isabella who became Abdul Rahmanââ¬â¢s wife later and together they had nine children. Twenty years later, at a crossroads market Abdul Rahman met Dr. John Cox whose life had been saved by Abdul Rahmans father many years ago in Africa. Cox offered to buy Abdul-Rahman from Foster, but he refused. Two decades later Coxââ¬â¢s son William with the help of local newspaper editor Andrew Marschalk wrote articles about Abdul-Rahmanââ¬â¢s cause. Articles caught the attention of then Secretary of State Henry Clay, who convinced Presidentà John Quincy Adams to free Abdul-Rahman. Abdul Rahman set out on a quest to raise enough money to purchase his familyââ¬â¢s freedom and immediately purchased the freedom of his wife for $200. Later he succeeded in raising only enough money for two of his children and their families. He forced to leave America witout his children. In 1829, he returned to Africa. In Africa he continued to press for his childrenââ¬â¢s freedom, but died only four months after his return. He never went back to his kingdom in Futa Jallon. Discussion On The Selective And Comprehensive Education Systems The debate on selective and comprehensive education systems is unending. Considering that every society might have its own system of education, it is almost difficult to find a homogenous agreement on which system is fit and acceptable to all. Debate on this topic always finds convincing arguments from either side. Some people argue that selective education is a practice of democracy-which gives every person the freedom to choose whatever he/she values. Proponents of selective education argue that it is a good system which ensures efficiency is maintained; to be precise, one size fit all system system weakens the value of education. Anderson (2007) argues that selective education benefits poorer pupils more. Writing about British education system, Anderson argues that we are failing to give excellent education to cleverer boys and girls and a sound basic education to less able pupils. Thesis Statement: The issue It is quite difficult to satisfactorily defend either side. This is because different people view this debate differently; human rights gurus see social segregation in it, politicians may view it either way while sociologists may claim that selection may lead to a feeling of inferiority complex in children who are viewed as less able. This paper takes the position that selective education should be discouraged, because it is an antithesis of personal choice, and it leads to social segregation and exclusiveness. Definition of Terms Selective and comprehensive education; what is it? As it sounds, selective education involves choosing pupils to join a certain school based on a certain criterion. This usually happens at the secondary level of education, rarely doest happen at the primary level. Many schools in the world practice an open-primary school system. Pupils who are regarded as intelligent join certain schools while those that are regarded as academically less able are pooled together in a different school. The opposite of selective is the comprehensive education system which accepts all students irregardless of their propensity. Here, children of mixed abilities are taught together. Every country may have a different criterion for selecting pupils who join selective schools. For instant in a system that existed in the United Kingdom and Wales at the beginning of the 1970s, pupils were selected to join two different secondary schools based on results to a test score at age 11. In other countries entrance examinations are administered. To note is that the criterion used may vary from one society to another. Examples of selective schools are like the British grammar school, the French lycee or the German Gymnasium) Why selective education? Wales (2009) argued that education systems are of two different types; those devised and imposed upon the people and those which arise of themselves out of the needs of the education (p.1). He also reiterates that irregardless of the system, wishes of the recipients and givers of education will try to modify it in one way or the other, with the wishes of the receiver having more weight. A government might provide education, but no body may be willing to take it, whereas when a group of persons say they need education a school develops. So is it possible to say that the receivers of education determine whether it is selective or comprehensive and why? Gardner (1959) described the American comprehensive high school as a peculiar American phenomenon dependable in the provision of good and suitable education, both academic and vocational, for all persons and in a democratic environment that the American people cherish. He saw it as recipe for democracy; it gave all people equal opportunity to choose. Gardner didnt was less interested in the efficiency of the system. However manpower shortages in the 1950s and the launching of the Russian sputnik in 1957 led to criticisms in the education system, it was viewed as waste of young talent and education for all became education for none (Passow, 1971). Focus was on the academically gifted student-whose educational prowess was akin to national survival. Despite several calls for the abolishment of the system and introduction of selection (Ricover, 1963 p. 38), the system survived especially in the early 1960s which witnessed heightened human rights concern for the poor child. However variou s modifications were enacted on the existing system. This led to some form of selection, whether, de jure or de facto. Theresa May, shadow Conservative education secretary (1999) in support of selective education, stressed the need for a system, with high standards in education and which meets the needs of all children. She said it was a myth that supporters of grammar schools are only concerned about education for the rich. She said selection is based on ability, challenges all, and gives a chance to the minority. Eric Hammond, former general secretary of the electricians union and chairman, supported her arguing that giving equal value to all learners does not necessarily imply a common school and strengthening weak schools by weakening the strong ones doesnt add value. In their research Bonhomme and Sauder (2009), concluded that the average effect of attending a selective school is too minimal and the differences in the performance of selective and non selective schools is due to the pupils composition. The counter-argument Similar literature as the one expounded above might convince somebody that the only way to maintain efficiency in education and support innovation is by selection. I agree to disagree. The biggest challenge today in the world is inequality, whether economic, social or political. Segregation of any kind leads to inequality. In the US, concerns with school segregation and declining educational achievement for the minority group drew attention to selection procedures and its consequences to the minority groups, segregation, whether de jure or de facto, contributes to a form of socio-economic isolation. A 1966 U.S. Office of Education countywide study often known as the Coleman Report found that a lager population of American children attended schools that were largely segregated-often based on racial background. The Coleman survey found that solemn discrepancies in educational achievement between Negro and white existed and continued to widen. Supporting the study Wilson (1963,) maintains that utilization of educational opportunities follows, to a large degree, the lines of the stratification of the society (p. 217). Other factors held constant, Wilson observes that the socio-economic factors will affect the academic performance of the student. He also opines that the consequences are detrimental in the case of racial segregation. Charles Pinderhughes, lamented that what students learn from one another is as significant as what they learn from teachers or the hidden curriculum, and which involves things as how children think and learn about themselves, how they think about and view other people and how to cope with them. In 1861 ââ¬â 1865 war was on. Parliament abolished slavery in America in 1865 but the south needed slaves for their trade. So they carried on mistreating blacks, disobeying the law. After the war (with the North winning) blacks were still treated with injustice and inequality. The blacks still had bad jobs and most of them worked for the whites for instance a cleaner or maid. When Tom Robinson was on trial in the court there were no black people in the jury.The black people who wanted to watch the trial had to sit on the upper tier where there were limited seats so most of them stood. â⬠Your fathers no better than the niggers and trash he works forâ⬠Miss Dubose told Jem. This is an extremely racist and somewhat unnecessary comment for Miss Dubose to make. This implies that Atticus is worse than, in her opinion, the blacks and other lower class of the town. Whites treated blacks like dirt and looked down on them whenever they would pass them in the street. There was a clear social hierarchy in Maycomb; the whites viewed themselves significantly higher than the blacks.All of Tom Robinsonââ¬â¢s evidence in the court case showed that he was not guilty but because he was black the jury sentenced him to prison. Aunt Alexandra had a somewhat haughty attitude towards things like this. Atticus and Aunt Alexandra had very different views on the way of life and the way people should live. For instance they both had very different perceptions on the word trashy.Atticus uses the word trashy to describe a stuck-up white man being racist towards a black man but Aunt Alexandra uses it to describe Walt er Cunningham and his family. The clear distinction between these two very different uses of the word is that Atticus uses it to describe people who are generally ignorant but Alexandra uses it to describe people of the lower class who are dirty. This reveals that the whole way through the story Alexandra sticks to her views and not even after Tom Robinsonââ¬â¢s court case does she change her mind. In a way Atticus does the same thing and throughout the novel fights to uphold justice.Atticus is the only white man apart from Judge Taylor who is not racist or prejudice towards the blacks. In the middle of the novel when Tom Robinson is in jail, Atticus guards him himself all night and when Mr Cunningham and a group of other men ambush him all Atticus does is try to keep the peace. Miss Dubose constantly has a moan about Atticus and what he stands for and Atticus completely ignores it and is extremely polite to her. He is an extremely kind and gentle man who is loyal to Tom Robinson . At the start of the novel Scout is incredibly naive, angry and violent.She also has no respect for other people like Walter Cunnigham. Scout finds it odd and strange that Walter Cunningham pours syrup all over his meal and she isnââ¬â¢t afraid to express her opinion vocally. This upsets not only Walter but Calpurnia as well and Scout gets a good telling off from her. This shows that Scout is not only disrespectful and rude but can also be slightly snobby. When she first heard of Boo Radley she pictured him peculiar looking and was awfully scared of him. Then when Boo started leaving gifts in a tree for Jem and Scout she thought that he could maybe be alright and not creepy like she thought.Then towards the end when Boo kills Bob Ewell to defend the children, Scout realises that he is a kind and not at all freaky. In fact she takes him by the hand and talks to him with high regard. These series of extremely shocking events changes Scouts character throughout the story. To Kill a Mockingbird has taught me a great deal about Prejudice and Justice. I have especially learned about Justice from the way that Atticus acted ,the way that Scout changed but most of all Tom Robinson and the people involved in the court case.
